For Gegenwart der Erinnerung (The Presence of Memory) we worked with the empty space of the stage and all it’s stage-specific components. This is only an in-between space though. The party in the play happens outside of the theatre, behind the rear stage door. And what happens back there is difficult to see. We can guess more than we can see.
The supplies for the party come up to the stage from the orchestra pit and get transported to the back by the performers. The empty in-between gets filled with the traversing of things, but foremost with language.
As the evening progresses the space turns more and more into a membrane, and then – like the characters of the play – it turns into a vacuum until it gets sucked up in the dark.
